Special needs

IELTS aims to assess the English language communication skills of all test takers fairly and objectively.

Our IELTS Centre can make arrangements to accommodate special requirements to enable test takers to attend a test and to understand and complete the tasks.

If you have a disability that might require specially modified materials, you must notify us three months prior to your IELTS test date, with your original medical report. The report must not be more than two years old.

If you have a disability which involves administration arrangements (e.g extra time), you must notify us six weeks prior to your IELTS test, with your original medical report. The report must not be more than two years old.

To apply or obtain additional assistance with special consideration / specially modified test materials, please contact the IELTS administrator at ielts@uts.edu.au before submitting your application to the UTS IELTS office.

Visual difficulties

A range of options are available, including enlarged print and brailed question papers.

Answers may be recorded in a variety of ways, e.g. via an amanuensis or using a Braille machine and extra time may be allowed for completion of reading and writing modules.

Hearing difficulties

If you have partial hearing loss and can only hear with the help of headphones or special amplification equipment, you may ask for permission to use this equipment when taking listening modules.

A lip - reading version of the listening module is available.

A special needs version of the listening module is also available.

Learning difficulties

If you have dyslexia or a similar condition, you may request up to 30 minutes extra time to complete the reading and writing modules. Please ask us if you are not sure whether you qualify for help.
