Pretesting

Pretesting is a free of charge IELTS English listening, reading and writing test for people whose first language is not English and are looking to work and study or move to Australia.

What does pretesting involve?

Pretesting is a general test that examines a candidate’s ability in listening, reading and writing. The listening test takes approximately 40-45 minutes and the reading and writing tests take approximately one hour each. Speaking is not included.

What are the benefits?

Pretesting enables people whose first language is not English to establish their language ability according to IELTS standards. Importantly, it helps them see where they may need to improve in preparation for the official IELTS test.

The pretest also provides valuable examination practice, giving you an insight into what an IELTS test is like and the types of questions that are asked. Participating in pretesting will also give you experience and practice of working under examination conditions.

What results will you get?

You will receive an approximate band score for both the listening and reading pretests. This score will be converted into an approximate IELTS band score for listening and reading. For the writing pretest, you will also receive an approximate band score. Please note that your scores cannot be used as official IELTS test results.

When and how will you get the results?

Approximately six weeks after your pretest.

To receive your results email pretesting@uts.edu.au six weeks after your pretest with your candidate number and full name, and we will email you your results as soon as we receive them from Cambridge. You can also pick up your results in person.
