IELTS

Application Forms

To sit the IELTS test, you must complete an IELTS application form (opens an external website) and GST form.

Forms are available for pick up from:

  • UTS International
    Level 3A
    UTS Tower Building 1
    No 15 Broadway
    Sydney
  • or can be downloaded from the internet:
    You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader (opens an external site) in order to view the PDF files.

Bookings

Once applications have been completed, bookings must be made in person at:

UTS International
Level 3A
UTS Tower Building 1
No. 15 Broadway
Sydney.

The IELTS office will open Monday to Friday between 9.00am - 4.45pm.

To apply you MUST bring:

  • the completed IELTS application and GST forms
  • your valid passport
  • two passport-sized photos (no more than 6 months old).

Once the maximum number of candidates have enrolled, for a test, the test is closed. It is recommended that applications be submitted well in advance of the required test date.

Fee and Payment Details

The IELTS test fee is payable when booking.

The current fee for the IELTS test in Australia is A$280 (A$308 including GST where applicable). Fees are current as at Dec 2007.

Application fees can be paid in the following ways:

  • by EFTPOS or Credit Card (excluding Diners Club);
  • by Money Order (obtainable from Australia Post - made payable to University of Technology, Sydney);
  • by Bank Cheque, made payable to University of Technology, Sydney.

Personal cheques and cash payments are NOT accepted.

Recommended guidelines for candidate photographs

The following guidelines are provided as a recommendation only; the decision to accept the photographs submitted by a candidate is at the Administrator's discretion.

  • Candidates provide two identical colour photographs that are not more than six months old
  • Black and white photographs cannot be accepted
  • The image must be clearly visible i.e. the photographs must not be stamped, signed / written on, marked, folded, stapled over or damaged in any way

Size

  • Standard passport sized photograph
  • Minimum 35 mm in width
  • Minimum 45 mm in height
  • photo

Pose

  • A close-up of the head and top of shoulders (70 - 80% of the photo)
  • Looking straight towards the camera with face square on
  • Both ears showing or both edges of the face visible if hair covers the ears
  • NOT portrait style
  • NOT looking over one shoulder
  • Head not tilted or rotated

Photo quality

  • Print quality of professional standard
  • High quality paper and colour image
  • No ink or marks on the image

Lighting and focus

  • No shadows or glare on the image or background
  • Good colour balance that shows skin tones naturally
  • A plain, light coloured background (beige, white, blue background recommended, not red)
    • no objects in the background
    • no patterned background
  • Appropriate brightness and contrast
  • Uniform lighting
  • Sharp focus and clear
  • No 'red eye'

Expression

  • A neutral expression with mouth closed
    • no smiling, squinting, frowning or raised eyebrows
  • Nothing covering the face
  • Eyes open and clearly visible
    • no hair covering the eyes

Glasses, Headcovers, Clothing

  • Nothing should hide the outlines of the eyes, nose or mouth
  • If wearing glasses, eyes must be clearly shown
    • frames must not cover the eyes
    • no flash reflection or glare off the glasses
    • no tinted lenses
  • Head coverings worn for religious reasons are permitted
    • Facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of face must be clearly shown

Cancellations & Transfer due to illness or serious cause

Candidates who do not attend a test due to major illness or serious cause are required to complete the approved medical form [pdf, 58kb], which must be returned to the UTS IELTS counter with original test receipt ($280) no later than 5 working days after the test date. A medical practitioner must complete page 3 of the medical form. Candidates who are requesting consideration in cases of "serious cause" will need to submit the medical form with appropriate supporting documents.

Results pick up

  • In order to pick up results candidates need to show their passport . No other ID will be accepted.
  • It is not possible to authorise others to collect results on your behalf.
  • Results are available 13 days after the test at UTS International . Please see table for more information.
  • A list of results (by candidate number only) is available in the window of the UTS International office, after 2.00 pm, 13 days after the test. In order to see your results, you will need to keep a record of your candidate number. Office staff are not permitted to supply you with your number.
  • Results cannot be provided by e-mail, fax or telephone.
  • Candidates will only receive one IELTS Test Report Form. If results are not received in the mail, you cannot be supplied with a re-print. It is most important that you do not lose or give away your Test Report Form, as you will not be able to obtain another.
  • Up to five copies of your Test Result Forms can be mailed directly by our test centre to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and institutions such as universities and colleges but these must be ordered within 1 month of your test date. Copies cannot be sent to immigration agents or lawyers. To arrange for copies to be reprinted you need to complete a Copy of Results request form(pdf 34kb) and submit the form to the IELTS office at UTS.
  • After one month, a $15 fee for each result form applies.
  • For mailing re-prints overseas, a stamped-addressed airmail or SMALL Express Post International envelope (from the post office) is required.

Appeals

The process for appealing your IELTS test score is as follows:

  1. Complete an appeal form (pdf 89kb) and the IELTS Enquiry on Results (EOR) form (pdf 68kb).
  2. Attach your original Test Result Form.
  3. Submit payment of A$176 for one or more modules. If there are any changes to the score, candidates will be refunded the full amount back.
  4. Forms must be submitted to the UTS IELTS office within 6 weeks of the test date.

Appeals should be finalised within 6 weeks.

Special needs

If you have special needs for the IELTS test it is important to inform the office 6 weeks before your test. You will need to provide the office with original documentation to support your special needs requests.
