Applying for a student visa to Australia

How to apply

  1. Check to see if your home institution has an agreement with UTS by talking to your International Office or viewing UTS Exchange Partner Universities.

If you do not study at a partner university, or if your university does not have Sufficient places to send you to UTS as an exchange student, you can apply for the UTS Study Abroad Program

  2. Discuss your exchange plans with your own university advisers. Your application must be sent to UTS by them.

  3. If you study at a university where English is not the language of instruction you will need to meet the UTS English Language Requirements for Exchange.

  4. You can choose your subjects from those offered by:UTS: Business, UTS: Design Architecture and Building, UTS: Education, UTS: Engineering, UTS: Communication, UTS: Information Technology, UTS: Law, UTS: Science or UTS: International Studies.

Make sure you read this in conjunction with the timetable to check that these are taught in the semester that you are attending. If the timetable has not yet been released look at the corresponding semester for the previous year in order to make a 'best guess' on when subject will be taught.

To enable some flexibility you should obtain approval in advance for six or seven subjects to allow for the possibility that some subjects may not be available when you enrol at UTS.

Explore the UTS website for information on subjects you can study (UTS online Handbooks). Subjects can be selected from any UTS Faculty but they must add up to a full time program. A full time program at UTS is 18-24 credit points. At UTS this usually consists of 3 to 4 subjects depending on the credits attached to each subject.

  5. Read the application tips (90 K word doc.) before completing your application form.

  6. Make an application to go on exchange. UTS requires you to apply with the UTS Exchange Application form (PDF document* 437K). If you are unable to print the application please email the relevant UTS Exchange Officer (who deals with your exchange university) to arrange for a copy to be faxed to you.  Check the timetable to see if the subjects are normally taught in the right semester.

  7. Complete your application and submit it to your university in time to meet UTS application deadlines:

30 August for UTS first semester (Autumn: February-June)
30 March for UTS second semester (Spring: July-December)

Check when your university requires your application so they can meet these dates.

When completing your application check that you have included the following documents:

  • Letter of support from your academic adviser
  • Certified copy of your full academic transcript issued by your home institution
  • Certified copy of any relevant English test results
  • List of subjects you are currently enrolled in if these are pre-requisites for your requested subjects

  • Letter of Offer
  • Acceptance form (which must be completed by you and returned to UTS with your Overseas Student Health Cover payment. The OSHC payment does not apply to students from Sweden and Norway for whom there are other arrangements)

When these have been received by UTS you will be sent:

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) form (which will allow you to apply for your visa)
