We all take for granted having fresh produce within easy reach, but what would you do if local food was under threat? Farmers like Harold work in the Sydney Basin. It's his bok choy, lettuce and tomatoes you enjoy biting into. Harold's veggies remain cheap and of good quality because he grows them close to where we live, and we benefit in many other ways. Food grown locally provides employment and economic activity worth $4.5 billion to the New South Wales economy. It means less waste and food miles while retaining green space that cools our urban areas and provides corridors for wildlife. But for farmers like Harold the outlook is bleak. Though the Sydney Basin is very fertile, competing needs for urban land are pushing food production out. This forces us to rely on far away farms more vulnerable to drought and floods under a changing climate. Currently 20 percent of the food we eat in Sydney is grown locally, but it could plummet to 6 percent. So it's not just Harold left in a dire situation. The path we're on threatens the food supplies of Sydney itself. Like water and energy, we need to plan for and protect Harold and others who provide our local food supply. Inform friends and family about the benefits and threats to local food. Tell your state MP we need a smarter plan for Sydney to balance the needs of our growing population.
