Electronic texts in scholarly research: roles in projects in the humanities
The study investigates how academics in literary and historical studies work with electronic textual resources and how interaction with electronic texts affects their research processes. This study uses qualitative methodology to investigate a particular research project as a context in which academic scholars interact with the texts and the way they integrate the results of the interaction in their research process. The focus is on the interplay between electronic texts and the researcher situated in his or her own research context. The study aims to explore a variety of interactions and how these interactions contribute to the development of ideas. It also considers obstacles and aids in engagement with electronic texts.
The research project contributes to our understanding of the initial stages of the envisaged scholarly change. It adds to our knowledge of the information behaviour of the humanities researcher and has potential practical implications for the development of digital collections, software applications, approaches to textual encoding and design of training programs.
