John McIntyre

Current Position

Senior Research Fellow, Research Centre for Vocational Education and Training (RCVET), Research Fellow, Research in Vocational Education and Training Group (RAVL), Faculty of Education, University of Technology, Sydney.

Teaching

John teaches research design and perspectives and policy analysis on Master of Education in Adult Education program, and supervises Masters and doctoral research students in the area of social policy and the contemporary state, learner identities, institutonal change and the social context of learning, and the analysis of equity in participation . He is a member of the ‘adult and vocational learning’ research group designated as one of six key research strengths of the university.

Research

Principal researcher on four research reports on adult community education (ACE) in Australia, research cited widely in Chapter 2 of the two of the second Senate Inquiry into ACE in Australia and principal researcher and project manager on three national projects funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) on factors affecting outcomes of participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in VET, a national survey of enterprise training in Australia and early school leavers at risk (1998). John has written on research in adult education and training and has a particular interest in paradigms of research in education and the relationship of policy and research in the contemporary state. He is currently completing his PhD by Publication through UTS in this area.

Community service

Member of the Australian Association of Adult Community Education [link to site] and member of the Executive of the NSW Branch of the Association. Member of the Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association and co-editor of the proceedings of its inaugural conference,VET Research: Influencing Policy and Practice.

Current Research

Adult community education: policy, providsion and participation (PhD by Publication in progress). Monitoring equity of access to participation invicational education and training in Australia. Research as a contextualised practice in postcompuyulsory education and training.
