Current Position

Clive Chappell is Senior Lecturer in the UTS Faculty of Education as well as Senior Research Fellow in the RCVET. He is also currently Programme Director for the Bachelor of Education (Adult Education) at the University.

Professional experience

Clive is involved in teaching, research and consultancy in the areas of Human Resource Development and Vocational Education and Training Clive's particular areas of professional expertise include issues to do with the development and implemenation of competency standards for industries and organisations and he has been a consultant to many organisations and professional bodies undertaking this process. These have included medical scientists, architects, Australian Gas, NSW Dept of Community Services and the Queensland Senior Executive Service. Clive has also designed, delivered and evaluated a course to develop the training skills of Chinese technical teachers in the Chinese steel industry and has recently completed a 2 year project for the government of Mexico which involved designing and delivering training programs in Mexico on developing competency based curricula and teaching competency based vocational education and training programs.

Research

Clive's experience in vocational education research can be gauged by the invitations he receives to speak at conferences. He has been a keynote speaker at national and international conferences organised to discuss issues to do with Training Reform including Competency and Professional Education, University of Canberra, Competency Standards and Teachers, Department of School Education Victoria, , Professional Competency Standards, Annual Conference of the Australian Audiological Society, Quality and Competency Standards, National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research, The Literacy Equation: Competence = Capability?, Australian Council for Adult Literacy and the International Conference - Thailand Work and Training Reform- Time For National Standards. He has also developed a competency profile for NSW TAFE teachers Professional Competence and the Initial and Continuing Education of NSW TAFE Teachers. He has extensive experience in Industry-institution collaboration with companies from the private as well as the government sector. In his current research Clive is examining vocational education and training policy and its effects on the identities of teachers in the public sector (PhD in progress), work-based learning and organisational development and the globalisation of education and training.
