Folders are displayed in the left hand pane of the Mail and Newsgroups window.

If you have installed Mail and Newsgroups to use IMAP(as is recommended) you will have two sets of folders: one under "username@uts.edu.au" and another set of folders under "Local Folders".
- The mailboxes (and mail) below "username@uts.edu.au" are not stored on your computer - they reside on the UTS Email System at UTS. These mailboxes are only available when your computer is connected to the UTS Network (either because you are on campus or because you are connected to the Internet)
- The mailboxes (and mail) below "Local Folders" are stored on your computer. Your computer does not need to be connected to the UTS Network to access your Local Mail.
If you do not have Mail and Newsgroups configured to use IMAP please correct this by following the instructions on the FAQ under "Configuring Netscape". All of the following examples assume you have Netscape configured to use IMAP.
Standard Mailboxes
Your Inbox (under "username@uts.edu.au") is where new messages arrive, and where they stay until you delete them or move them to another folder. Unsent Messages (under "Local Folders") is where your new messages wait until they are posted. Drafts (under "Local Folders") is where unfinished messages are saved; templates for frequently used messages can be saved in the Templates folder (under "Local Folders"). Copies of mail you send to others are kept in the Sent folder (under "Local Folders"). Trash (under "username@uts.edu.au") holds the mail you want to delete, at least until it is emptied. You can change whether these Standard Mailboxes reside under
"username@uts.edu.au" or "Local Mail". Go to
Edit / Preferences / Mail & Newsgroups /
Copies and Folders.
Creating Mailboxes
Messenger's Folders are just like creating folders or directories on your PC or Macintosh Desktop. To create a new Folder, Choose New Folder... from the File menu.
You can name your folder and create it on either
"username@uts.edu.au" or "Local Folders", or
as a subfolder within a previously created Folder.
Moving Mail between Mailboxes
To move messages between folders you use the Move Message command from the Message menu. The Copy Message is similar except it makes a copy of the message in the destination folder and leaves the original where it is.
Compacting your Folders
In time, your folders will have many messages in them and take up a lot of disk space. You can recover some of this disk space by choosing Compact this folder from the File menu. Messenger simply compresses messages and frees-up disk space - it does not delete messages. For most people it is only necessary to do it once a month.
