To start using Netscape Mail and Newsgroups, you need to
have a copy of Netscape 7.1. Mail and Newsgroups is part of
the Netscape 7.1 software suite. If you don't have a copy,
you can download it from the aarnet mirror. If you
have already downloaded and installed Netscape 7.1 and want to
confirm what settings/preferences you should have, proceed to the
FAQ page and look under the heading
Configuring Netscape. Otherwise, you can
continue with the tutorial.
You can access Netscape's Mail functionality from the Window menu, or by pressing ctrl+2.
To launch
Netscape 7.1 click on the Netscape 7.1 Icon (or the Netscape Mail
and Newsgroups Icon).
The default view of Netscape Messenger has four sections:
- Along the top is a row of buttons - "Toolbar" - which represent the typical Mail and Newsgroup functions such as "Get Msg", "Compose" etc.
- The left pane shows all of the various folders where you can file your email. ("Inbox" is highlighted)
- The top pane shows the list of email messages in the highlighted folder.
- The bottom pane shows the contents of the email message which is highlighted in the list
