The UTS Mail System allows you to use encryption to protect confidential information (e.g. your username and password) as it travels across the internet.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protects Webmail and IMAP connections.
TLS (Transport Layer Security) protects mail sent via SMTP.
Webmail Encryption
All Webmail connections are encrypted using SSL. No action is required to protect the connection between you and the mail server.
SSL Encryption for IMAP
IMAP over SSL is available, but is not enabled by default in most mail clients including Netscape 7.1. If you access your email from outside UTS and do not wish to use UTS Webmail, we recommend you use IMAP and enable SSL to protect your connection to the mail server.
To SSL enable IMAP in Netscape 7.1:
- Select the Edit menu (Screenshot)
- Select Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings
- Select "Server Settings" on the left
- Select Use secure connection under Server Settings (Screenshot)
Activating TLS for Sending Mail(SMTP)
If you send mail from outside the university and do not wish to use UTS Webmail, we recommend you use TLS encryption to protect your connection to the mail server.
To enable TLS encryption in Netscape 7.1:
- Select the Edit menu (Screenshot)
- Select Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings
- Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) on the left
- Under Use Secure Connection (SSL) select "Always"

(Note that Netscape refers to TLS as "SSL" here)
