WHAT DOES THE ELSSA CENTRE DO?

The ELSSA Centre provides:

  • English language and literacy teaching
  • academic development 
  • intercultural education 

We work with:

  • undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • local and international students
  • academic and general staff

 

WHAT KIND OF ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE?

  • in some faculties there are subjects with an academic literacy component

At the ELSSA Centre we offer:

  • drop-in workshops
  • non-credit classes and one-off workshops
  • one-to-one appointments

We also conduct research into:

  • language and literacy
  • teaching and learning
  • academic and professional discourses
  • issues of culture and internationalisation

SERVICES FOR UTS STAFF – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

All academic and support staff may use the ELSSA Centre. Services are free and confidential.

The ELSSA Centre supports:

    • student learning
    • staff learning

 

STUDENT LEARNING

The ELSSA Centre supports student learning by providing assistance to your students at the Centre and in faculties. If you are concerned about your students’ academic literacy, you can refer them to the Centre either individually or in groups. At the Centre, we teach general classes, for example, pronunciation classes, academic writing classes. We also liaise with faculties, providing academic literacy assistance and teaching for faculty subjects.

In Faculties

The ELSSA Centre liaises with faculties to teach specialised workshops, short courses, core subjects and electives. For more details, click here.

We also run academic orientation classes for undergraduate and postgraduate students. For further information, contact the ELSSA Centre Office Manager.

STAFF LEARNING

The ELSSA Centre supports staff learning through offering access to our academic language and literacy classes and individual consultations.

The ELSSA Centre can also organise, through department/unit heads and/or supervisors, tailor made workshops or training sessions for staff needing to develop communications skills specific to their work requirements, such as writing memos, letters, emails, minutes, reports, publications, job applications, or making oral presentations at meetings. For further information, please contact the ELSSA Centre Director.
