ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN AUSTRALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

As an Exchange or Study Abroad student, you can enrol in the Advanced Diploma in Australian Language and Culture (ADALC) offered by the UTS ELSSA Centre. Subjects undertaken in this university course will be credited towards your home university degree.

The ADALC is offered at this level:

Course
IELTS
(academic strand)
TOEFL
(Internet-based)
TOEFL
(paper-based)
TOEFL
(computer-based)
ADALC
5.0 – 6.0
64 – 80
510 – 550
180 – 213

The ADALC provides English language development through the study of Australian society and culture, and may be undertaken by students who:

  • are second language speakers of English
  • have an English language test score lower than the UTS entry requirement.

There are two options for the length of program undertaken:

  1. study ADALC for one or two semesters full time
  2. study ADALC for one semester then take an IELTS or TOEFL test; if you meet the UTS entry requirements, you can enrol in UTS faculty subjects for the second semester.

The ADALC is comprised of eight subjects:

  • Australian Society and Culture 1 & 2
  • English for Academic Purposes 1 & 2
  • Film and Popular Culture 1 & 2
  • Researching Australia 1 & 2

To facilitate learning about Australian culture, the ELSSA Centre arranges for each student to experience life at UTS and in Sydney through:

  • a one-week 'shadowing' program with a UTS buddy (see Interlinks for more information)
  • a one-semester observation of a selected subject in a UTS faculty
  • excursions to places of cultural importance.

The ELSSA Centre is one of the longest-established university language centres in Australia, with a first class reputation for teaching and research.
