Intensive academic English program

HELPS is continuing to support you through the holiday period!

We are running intensive academic English programs during the semester break in July. The workshops are free and open to all UTS students.

The program includes workshops in following areas:

Academic Writing Program

You can choose from a Day or Evening class

  • 10 July to 14 July 2017 (daily)
  • Day class (13:00 - 16:00) or Evening class (18:00 - 20:00)

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • analyse assignment questions and plan for assignments
  • understand different types of assignments and their structures
  • practise academic reading and note-taking skills
  • practise paraphrasing and synthesising skills
  • correctly use Harvard UTS referencing style conventions
  • write clear academic paragraphs
  • understand common sentence-level grammar errors
  • edit and proofread your writing

Academic Speaking Program

You can choose from either a Pronunciation or Seminar presentation class.

Pronunciation Correction

  • 17 July to 21 July 2017 (daily)
  • 13:00 - 16:00 

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • develop an awareness of the important features of pronunciation – sounds, stress, intonation, pausing, chunking, and connected speech
  • practise listening for these important pronunciation features in lectures
  • incorporate these important pronunciation features into academic presentations
  • identify some of the problems that are common to different groups of language learners who use English as a second language
  • identify some of the problems common to individual students
  • practise solutions to common and individual problems
  • develop self-study pronunciation techniques with the use of a range of current audio-visual pronunciation resource materials

Seminar Presentation

  • 17 July to 21 July 2017 (daily)
  • Day class (14:00 - 16:00) or Evening class (18:00 - 20:00)

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • write a presentation objective and use it to focus as you prepare for your presentation
  • select relevant material for your presentation
  • express yourself clearly, audibly and fluently
  • choose a speaking style appropriate to the situation
  • use appropriate non-verbal communication
  • use audio visual aids such as PowerPoint and Prezi to support your presentation
  • handle questions from an audience
  • use strategies to overcome nerves
  • compose and deliver a short presentation and gain feedback from this presentation
  • evaluate your own performance

Communication for Employment Program

  • 10 July to 14 July 2017 10:00 - 12:00 (daily)
  • 17 July to 21 July 2017 10:00 - 12:00 (daily)

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • learn and practise English communication skills for the workplace
  • build your confidence in using English for your career and job searching
  • learn techniques to network with ease
  • practise pitching your improved skills to employers
  • practise English language techniques to help you apply for jobs
  • develop your 'on-the-job' communication skills
