The UTS Strategic Plan 2009-2018
As we enter our third decade, we are positioning ourselves to build on our impressive achievements. During our third decade, we aim to become a world-leading university of technology.
UTS has launched a new strategic plan (PDF 140k) to guide our activities in the years ahead and to ensure that we realise our potential as a university. The development of the new plan involved extensive consultation and discussion with our staff, students, alumni and industry partners. It reflects our aspirations as an organisation and acknowledges our important relationships with our external stakeholders as well.

Our vision
Our vision for 2018 is to be a world-leading university of technology.
How will we work toward achieving our vision?
For us this means embedding and showcasing leading edge IT and other technologies in all disciplines; performing strongly in the disciplines of science, engineering and technology; remaining highly relevant to industry and the professions; and aligning our education and research with relevant national and economic priorities.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to advance knowledge and learning to progress the professions, industry and communities of the world.
Our values
To guide our performance and our interactions with each other, with students, our partners and the wider community, we have articulated our values for the first time. Our values in action are:
- Discover and share new knowledge and new ways to lead through our teaching, research, intellectual debate and use of technology
- Engage and collaborate with each other, our students, alumni, partners, professions and communities, locally and internationally
- Empower each other and our students to grow, contribute, challenge and make a difference
- Deliver on our obligations to each other, our students, our partners and communities while maintaining high standards and ethical behaviour
- Sustain our local and global environment, organisational health and our ability to create a positive, viable future
Our objectives during 2009 - 2013
To build our reputation during 2009 - 2013 we will:
- Strengthen the standing of the UTS Model of global practice-oriented learning
- Increase the scale, quality and impact of research in our discipline fields
- Enhance our strong, inclusive university environment through state-of-the-art learning, research and social spaces, infrastructure and highly responsive services
- Build the capabilities of our people and processes to sustain and improve performance into our third decade and beyond
The UTS model of learning
The UTS Model of Learning has three distinctive interrelated features:
- An integrated exposure to professional practice through dynamic and multifaceted modes of practice-oriented education
- Professional practice situated in a global workplace, with international mobility and international and cultural engagement as centre piece
- Learning which is research inspired and integrated, providing academic rigour with cutting edge technology to equip graduates for life-long learning
Our commitment to quality improvement
There are a number of ways UTS demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement, such as:
- The University's annual planning, budget and performance reporting cycle
- A range of student and graduate surveys to track and improve the quality of teaching, learning and student experience
- The University's annual Course Performance Report cycle
- The University's Environmental Health and Safety Management System
These and other University initiatives are examples of the University's implementation of the Plan, Do, Review, Improve (PDRI) cycle that UTS has adopted to embed continuous improvement across all aspects of our planning, project management and operational activities.
The Planning and Quality Unit supports the implementation of the Planning and Improvement Framework throughout the University.
UTS is a member of the Australian Technology Network of Universities (opens an external site).
