Douglas McDonald has quite the impressive CV. The recipient of a number of awards for his academic performance throughout university, the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award in 2011 and most recently the University Medal for the Bachelor of Laws in 2015, Douglas is still incredibly humble, describing his success as “unexpected”.
It may come as a surprise to many Australians that in 2015, you can be issued an on-the-spot fine of $500 simply for uttering “offensive language” – typically swear words – in a “public space” under section 4A of the Summary Offences Act 1988 (NSW).
