World Mental Health Day: Making It Real
10 October 2016
" alt="Nursing students interact with a participant in the Making It Real simulation. " title="">As we celebrate World Mental Health Day and National Mental Health Week, students at UTS have been practising their therapeutic communication skills using the 'Making It Real' simulation.
Through the simulation, third-year nursing students get the opportunity to engage directly with people who have lived experience of mental illness and, as a result, develop the rapport and empathy they need to be effective in professional practice.
The award winning simulation has been developed and implemented into the curriculum for the UTS Bachelor of Nursing by mental health lecturer Fiona Orr, alongside fellow UTS academics and healthcare consumers.
