History
How it did it all begin?
The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology began on 1 July 2008 as the result of a merger between the previously separate faculties.
Both faculties were originally part of the former New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT), with the Faculty of Engineering starting in 1965 and the Faculty of Information Technology beginning as a single computer science elective in 1966. In the 1970s, the Faculty of Mathematical and Computing Sciences and the School of Computing Sciences emerged, and then in 2002, the departments of Computer Systems, Information Systems and Software Engineering combined to establish the Faculty of Information Technology.
UTS Engineering and IT today
Today, the faculty offers ten undergraduate courses; fourteen combined undergraduate courses; twenty-four postgraduate courses; five research degrees; and numerous professionally recognised short courses to over 8,000 students.
The Faculty also offers the prestigious Bachelor of Information Technology Co-operative Scholarship, a three-year fast-track course sponsored by industry. As a measure of success, the four founding sponsors: American Express, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, IBM and Westpac, continue to come on as sponsors of the 26-year-old program.
Engineering also has numerous industry sponsored scholarships available in the undergraduate program as well as a number of equity scholarships for those who’ve experienced financial hardship or educational disadvantage.
In 2014 the Faculty entered the next phase in its history with the opening of the Engineering and IT Building. For the first time, the Faculty is housed within one building, equipped with the latest high-end infrastructure to inspire new advances in technology, practice and education.
