Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Teaching, Learning and Equity)

Professor Shirley Alexander BSc, MAppStats (Macq), GradDipEd (SCAE)

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Teaching, Learning and Equity) Professor Shirley Alexander is responsible for leading the achievement of the University's key priorities in teaching and learning, student focus, and equity and diversity.

Her major responsibilities include:

  • enhancing the quality of the University's teaching, creating an environment of innovation and excellence in teaching and learning to ensure that UTS is recognised internationally as a leading Australian university (in collaboration with faculties, the Institute for Interactive Media & Learning, the Equity & Diversity Unit, and the University Library)
  • maintaining an effective, service-oriented and sustainable learning environment and infrastructure for all students
  • increasing opportunities for student and staff learning, social, cultural and intellectual interaction, by promoting the development of a strong student focus and culture across the University (in collaboration with Student Services)
  • oversee the development of policies and practices to promote equity and eliminate discrimination amongst students and staff and continue to develop a diverse, inclusive and accessible university environment (in collaboration with the Equity and Diversity Unit and the Student Ombud)

Shirley Alexander is Professor of Learning Technologies and has worked at UTS for the past fourteen years, having previously held the positions of Director of the Institute for Interactive Media and Learning, and Dean of the Faculty of Education.

She has an international reputation for her research on the use of information and communication technologies in education. She was a member of the Committee for University Teaching and Staff Development (CUTSD) from 1997 – 1999 and of the Australian Universities Teaching Committee (AUTC) from 2000-2004.
