Overview

Established in memory of the late Garth Barnett, a self-taught designer, the aim of the Prize is to encourage and reward excellence in Design, and is awarded to students who produce an exemplary portfolio of design work, specifically in interiors.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the Prize, a candidate must meet all of the following criteria:

  • In the year for which the award is made be enrolled in a:
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture; or
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior and Spatial Design; or
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture/Bachelor of Arts in International Studies; or
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior and Spatial Design/Bachelor of Arts in International Studies; or
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture/Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation; or
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior and Spatial Design/Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation; or
    • Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture (Honours); or
    • Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Interior and Spatial Design;
  • Must be in their final full-time equivalent year of study in interior design (equivalent to successfully completed 96 or above credit points) at the time of the prize application; and
  • Must have received a Weighted Average Mark of 80 or above; and
  • Candidates meeting the above criteria will be identified and be invited by the Faculty to submit an application.

 

To apply, invitees must:

  • Submit a single .PDF digital portfolio (max. 10mb) A3 landscape format, no more than 5 pages including:
  • One cover page that has a brief written description of each design project in the portfolio. Each description should address the attributes of each design project and a brief self-appraisal of what is good or lacking in each design project (max. 100 words for each design project description).
  • Four portfolio pages that comprise the applicant’s best work and are up to four original design projects. Each design project can be displayed using any combination of drawings, model photos, renders and/or sketches as the applicant sees fit. The applicant should include their full name on each page of the PDF digital portfolio. Where group work is submitted, the applicant must note which aspects of each design project they were responsible for.
  • Attend an interview in person, if required.

Selection process

As evidenced by the submitted portfolio of work and demonstrated in the interview:

  • Quality of or exemplary design work
  • Ability to provide a new/unique understanding or insight
  • Innovativeness in design
  • Ability to clearly communicate their design to others
  • Ability to resolve design problems
  • Ability to act as a role-model for the Faculty and advocate for the Garth Barnett program
  • Academic Performance (WAM at the time of selection) may be taken into consideration
